NOTES
1). From The Prague News, Friday, April 1915, front page. A TRAGIC DEATH Walter Alexander Caught in Belt onWellDrill and Crushed to Death Walter Alexander, while drilling a well on a farm of J.H. Patterson, south of Paden, seven or eight miles, met a sudden deathMondayafternoon by falling into the maindrive belt which operatedthedrill. No one was present when the accident occurred, he wasrunningthe machinery by himself. A negro woman living at the place with her husband, tenants ofMr.Patterson, heard a noise and looking out of the house sawtheunfortunate man caught between the belt and the pulley wheel, andimmediately ran to the field where her husband and another negromanwere working and told them of the accident, but on their arrival,Mr.Alexander was found to be dead. They cut the belt in two so astorelease the body, which was brought to his home in this city, latethat evening. The supposition is that Walter in trying to tighten the beltslippedand fell into it, as his head and shoulders were next totheframework of the derrick, the belt being across his breastandshoulders, the rest of his body being on the outside of thepulley.Large bruised spots and contusions showed where the belt hadcrushedhim against the pulley. There were no other marks or injurieson thebody, save where it had come into contact with the machinery. Mr. Alexander is the third oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Alexander,ofWillzetta. Besides his aged father and mother, he leaves fourbrothers, two sisters a wife and two little sons to mourn his death.Walter wasrespected and liked by all who knew him, and his untimelydeath isregretted by all. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon by Rev. McElvaneyand interment made at Prague Cemetery. To the grief sticken parents, wife and little sons, we extendsinceresympathies, and trust that He who doeth all things for the bestwillcomfort them in their hour of sorrow.
