NOTES
1). 1735328.ged BeamandWilson.FTW This according to the Don Norman page. Andrew contracted Typhoid Fever when a small child. Frozen sod was pressed to both sides o f his head to control high fever. He survived the fever, but was deaf the rest of his life . He was said to carry a small slate for people to write on when he couldn t understand them . He also taught children with the slate. Many years ago Escue Norman spent the night in a boarding house in Weston, WV. An elderly la dy noted his name and told how Andrew J. Norman had made her first pair of shoes, when she wa s a child. They had no nails. Andrew and Amanda Bought a 21 acre farm on the left fork of White Oak Camp Run near Normantow n, WV. In Sept. , 1862, Andrew was robbed by three men claiming to be Confederate soldiers . He brought suit against them in Ritchie Co., WV. The charge wasthat they did with forc e and arms seize, take, detain and carry away two hounds, and other property of the value o f eight Hundred dollars. There is no record that the case was ever prosecuted. These people may have been part of any of the loosely organized groups of confederate guerril las who roamed that area during the early years of the Civil War. Although they were retroac tively granted Army status by the governor of Virginia, they seemedto prey on the resident s of the area, with little actual military activity against the Union forces. After Monoka died, later Andrew left his farm, which was sold at public auction on June 1, 18 80 to Henry L. Gaston for 94 cents delinquent taxes. Andrew J. Norman was in Ritchie Co., on May 12, 1894 where he prepared an affidavit on behal f of his sister in law, Tamar Norman. Tamar was attempting to obtain a Civil War widow s pen sion. This is the last written record of Andrew J. Norman. Savilla Conrad remembered having seen Andrew Jackson Norman near Rosedale, WV sometime afte r 1900. As she recalled, We lived 10 miles above Rosedale. Mable born 4 5 1908 was les s than two years old when old deaf Andy Norman came walking through. He tried to ask directi ons to Frametown, but I couldn t understand him. He wrote on a slate and I turned it over an d wrote directions on the back. He had been a portly man but wasn t carrying much flesh at t hat time. There is an unconfirmed report that Andrew Jackson Norman went to Oklahoma with one of his ch ildren and died there. Susan died in Ohio. 1880 Census Census Place De Kalb, Gilmer, West Virginia Source FHL Film 1255402 National Archives Film T9 1402 Page 177D RelationSexMarrRaceAgeBirthplace Andrew NORMANSelfMMW53WV Fa WVMo WV Susan NORMANWifeFMW35WV Occ Keeping HouseFa WVMo WV Andrew NORMANSonMSW12WV Occ FarmerFa WVMo WV Sarah M.
