1). 18401.ged The United States Census of 1790 shows Hunt Downing living in E. Caln Township Chester County, PA. He is listed as head of family, with four males over 16, males under 16, and five females residing in his home. From Chester County and its People , by W. W. Thomson, 1898 Hunt Downing began tavernkeeping at the Washington Tavern, in Downingtown, 1786, and continued in that occupation for many years. He was the first postmaster at Downingtown, and at the timeof the Whisky Insurrection was quartermaster to some of the troops encamped near the tavern. Hunt Downing an old and respectable inhabitant of the Great Valley, died at his residence in West Whiteland on Friday last. He had been much in active life a public house keeper, an extensive Stage Proprietor, and a Director of the Bank of Chester county, until about two years since, when infirmities brought on by increasing age, induced him very wisely to resign his situation as Director, and lessen hi business responsibilities. The companieon of his early life, and his tender solace under the weight of affliction, was taken from him about two months since for some time previous to which he was afflicted with a paralysis, which unfitted him for active life. He has gone to bourne whence no traveller return at a ripe old age and the recollections of his kindness and his usefulness will be pleasing to his family and numerous friends. The Hunt Downing House still exists, and is on the registry of historical buildings. It is located at 600 W. Lincoln Hwy., Exton, Chester co., PA. The Gregath book indicates he served in 2nd Co., 2nd Battalion, Philadelphia Militia under Lt. Col.James Read and Capt. George Engels. In 1790 liv East Caln,Chester Co., PA.
