1). MIKELL, EPHRAIM Michell, Mickel, Mickael, Mikel d. 1743 . Grandfather of EPHRAIM MIKELL 174·1 1809 son in law o f WILLIAM HAZZARD. Ephraim Mikell, son of Ephraim Mikell and Martha Seely, wa s a planter in St. Helena Parish where he had two plantatio ns Port Royal 37 slaves and Indian Land 34 slaves . H e served his home parish as a member of the Twelfth Royal A ssembly 1739 1742 and a captain in the militia 1740 174? 3 . As a militiaman he participated in General James Ogleth orpe s abortive siege of St. Augustine 1740 .Although Mike ll owned a pew in St. Helena Parish Church, he probably wa s an Antipedo Baptist like his father. Both men made beques ts to the Baptist Church on Edisto Island. Mikell married twice. By his first wife Mary, he had fou r sons John, Joseph, Benjamin, and Ephraim. On 22 June 173 6 he wed Elizabeth Hazzard, daughter of William Hazzard an d Elizabeth Russell and the widow of John McGilvery. The y had one daughter, Elizabeth m. John Story . Ephraim Mike ll died sometime between 2 September 174·3 when he signed h is will and 19 September 1743 when it was proved.
2).  The Biographical Directory of the South Carolina House o f Representatives by Walter B. Edgar lists Ephraim Mikell   s wives as Elizabeth Hazzard and  Mary   rather than Ann Sc ott . Townsend Mikell  s Genealogy also refers to Mary,  Mai den Name  .
