Born in Virginia, the son of Anthony Hampton and Elizabe th Preston. Educated. Came to South Carolina from Virgini a in 1774. Settled on Enoree River. During Revolutionary Wa r, captain and major of militia, 1780 82. Married Margare t Winn, niece of JohnWinn. After war, settled at Beaufor t for a few years removed to plantation in fork between Saluda and Broad Rivers in Ne wberry later Lexington District. Justice of peace. Justic e of quorum. County court judge. Commissioner for opening n avigation ofBroad River. Commissioner of roads. Company t o improve navigation on Broad and Pacolet Rivers, 1788. Ta x collector, Lower District, 1786 87. Delegate from the Low er District to the state convention to ratify the Federal Constitution, 1788 vote d against ratification. S. C.
