1). CAPT. ISAAC JOHNSON AND HIS MEN Isaac John was the son of John of Roxbury. He was b o r n i n E ngland and came to Massachusetts with his fathe r s fami ly , probably in the company with Gov. Winthro p . H e was adm itt ed freeman March 4, 1635. He wasof the Artillery Company in 1645, and was its ca p t a i n in 1667. He was ensign of the Rocksberry milita r y c om pa ny previous to 1653, and on June 13th of that y ea r wa s e lec ted captain. He was representitive 1671. He married Elizabeth Porter,of Roxbury, January 20 , 1 6 3 7 , and had Elizabeth, born Dec. 24, 1637 John bor n N o v . 3 , 1639, died 1661 Mary born Apr. 24, 1642 Isa ac b ap ti ze d Jan y 7, 1644 Joseph baptized Nov. 9, 1645 , die d s oon N athaniel born May 1, 1647. The daughter E lizabe th m arri ed H enry Bowen, who became lieutenant o f his com pan y and w as i n the Swamp Fight. The Bowens, w ith many o the r Roxbur y peop le, removed sometime after 1 686 to th e town ship of N ew Roxb ury, granted them by Mas sachusetts Colony , but afte rwards f ound to be within th e Connecti cut bound s and was r enamed Wo odstock. The eld est son Isa ac marrie d Mary Harri s and remov ed to Middle town, Conn . Isaac s so n Joseph inhe rited his gr andfathe r s Naragan sett claim,b eing then of W oodstock. The younge st son Natha ni el, marrie d Mary Smith i n 1667, and sometim e after 16 83 rem oved, p robably to Marl borough.His widow d ied Aug ust 13, 16 83 On July 6, 1675, Capt. Johnson was sent with a small e s c o r t to conduct 52 friendly Indians to the army at Mou n t H op e . On July 15, 1675, on news of the attack upon M en don , h e w as sent out there to relieve the town and wa s o rder ed b ac k on July 26th. Upon mustering at Dedham P lai n fo r the N ara gansett campaign, Capt. Johnson was pl ace d in c omman d o f a company made up of men from Roxbur y, D orchest er, Mi lton , Braintree, Weymouth, Hingham, and Hul l, numbe ring 7 5 al l told. At the battle of the Gre at Swa mp figh t Capt. J ohnso n was killed when leading hi s men a gainst t he barrie r at th e entrance to the fort . After hi s death a nd the mor tal woun d of Lt. Upham, th e command o f thecomp any passe d to Ensig n Henry Bowen , later promot ed to lieut enant.
