1). WILLIAM HOADLEY, or Hoadle as he wrote it, was bor n i n E n g land about1630, and settled in Saybrook, Connec ticu t , a s ea rly as 1663. In 1666, hebought the home lo t of t h e Rev . Abr aham Pierson in Branford, Connecticut, when th a t rever end gentleman removing to New Jersey, tr ansplant e d hisBran ford ch urch and founded the city of N ewark an d t he First P resbyter ianchurch of that city. William Hoadley, who was a merchant, had his shop adjo i n i n g his dwelling.A selectman several years during 16 7 3 a n d 16 90, and at a town meetingheld June 26, 1683 , h e wa s ap point ed to keep the Ordinary. The death of hi s wif e doubt less caused him to give up the tavern an d hi s succ essor wa sappoin ted March 28, 1687. William signed the Plantation Covenant of Branford, Ja n u a r y 20, 1667 8,and was admitted a freeman in Octobe r 16 69. He represented Branford in the General Assembly, betw e e n 1 6 78 and 1685,and was one of the patentees of the t o w n Febr ua ry 16, 1685 6. WilliamHoadley was one of th e gr an d juror s a t a Court of Quarter Sessions at NewHav en, J une , 1688 , an dwas one of a committee appointed Oc tobe r 11 , 1686,t o mak e application to the General Assem bly a t Har tford fo r liber ty forthe town to embody int o a chur ch est ate. In 1 699, hav ing previouslyserved o n the commi ttee t o build a m eeting ho use, was one of th ecommittee t o procu re a ministe r for th e town. In Decem ber 1701, Wil liamHoad ley was give n permissi on to buil d a pew for hims elf and f amily andals o for two o f his s ons and their wiv es. Willia m was calle d Captain inth e town records and do ubtless com manded a com pany of Coloni a l Militia atsome t ime. He die d December 170 9, aged abo ut 79 , and the inven tory of hise state, taken De cember 2 7, 1709 , showed him t o have been a n extensivelandh olde r and the po ssessor o f considerable p roperty. The name and date of death of his first wife are unkn o w n , b ut that theywere the parents of eight children i s s ho w n i n a list dated January 17,1676. The names of b ut s ev e n chil dren however are known and only sixsurvive d hi m .
