NOTES
1). Descendants of Thomas Durfee by Charles L. Durfee charlesldurfee.GED Bennett s Finding Your Forefathers in America on page 284, quotes a statement made by Lana in 1846, that ... I was born June 6, 1788, in Montgomery County, NY ... . Tamma Durfee Miner, in her biographical sketch of her parents stated that her father... was born October 3, 1788, in Rhode Island ... Mother was born June 6, 1788, and was of Dutch descent ... . The date of Lana s death in Bennett s book on page 284 is May 17, 1850, as it is in several other sources. In a copy of Tamma s biographical sketch she was quoted as saying that Lana died May 17, 1856, at age 62. If she were 62 at her death and was born in 1788, the death year would have been 1850, not 1856. Private Edmond Durfee served in Colonel Farnham s 129th New York Militia Regiment, 1812 1814, and saw active service in the War of 1812. From the National Archives War of 1812 Service Records. Most of this family were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Mormons. Edmund was a carpenter, millwright, and farmer. When the U. S. 1820 census of Lenox, Berkshire County, MAdison County, NY, was taken Edmund s family was 2 males under 10, 1 male 26 45, 3 females under 120, and 1 female 26 45. About 1822, when Tamma was about 9 years old Edmund moved to Amboy, Oswego County, NY. When the U. S. 1830 census of New London Ruggles Twp. Huron County, OH, was taken Edmond s family was 2 males under 5, 1 male 5 10, 2 males 10 15, 1 male 40 50, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5 10, 1 female 10 15, 2 females 15 20, and 1 female 40 50. Living very near were his brothers Jabez and Perry. In her Memorial, Tamma states that on June 1, 1830, she traveled with her parents and siblings by way of the Erie Canal and Lake Superior to Ohio, and that they settled in Ruggles Twp., in Huron County. Until the spring of 1831 they had all been Methodist but in April 1831, her father was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and then about the first of June her mother, sister Martha and brother Edmund followed suit. By October of 1831, Edmund was a High Priest of the Mormon Church. On June 7, 1835, the Mormons gathered to celebrate the near completion of a new Temple in Kirkland, OH. Among those blessed for their work on the Temple were Edmund Durfee and his brothers James and Jabez and his son Edmund. At this same time Edmund Durfee, Junior was ordained an elder. Not long after the financial panic of 1837, feelings against the Mormons intensified and the family, along with most of the other Mormons living in Kirkland fled to Caldwell County, MO. They were expelled from Missouri in November 1838, and Edmund settled in Yelrome sometimes called Morley s Settlement , in Lima Twp., IL When the U. S. 1840 census of Hancock County, IL was taken Edmund s family was 1 male under 5, 2 males 10 15, 1 male 50 60, 1 female 10 15, 1 female 20 30, and 1 female 50 60. Living nearby were his brothers Jabez and Perry and his nephew Perry Durfee, son of his brother James. Edward should be Edmund was listed on the 1842, Nauvoo, Illinois Tax Index. From Ancestry.com, January 2000. On September 13, 1845, the 60 70 families of Mormons living in Morley s Settlement were attacked by a mob of 200 300. Many houses and barns were burned and the Mormons fled to Nauvoo, IL. In November, Edmund and a number of other Mormons returned to Morley s Settlement to harvest their crops and save what grain they could for the planned trek west in the spring. On the night of November 15, 1845, the Mormons discovered a haystack on fire and rushed to extinguish it. As they were fighting the fire a number of shots were fired out of the darkness, one hitting Joseph just above the heart, killing him instantly. Edmund was buried in Nauvoo, IL. Lana married her brother in law Jabez Durfee January 21, 1846, and they settled in Missouri. A copy of Tammas Memorial gives Edmund s death as November 19, 1845. Reed gives 1786 as Edmund s year of birth and lists only seven of Edmund s thirteen children. The Descendants of Thomas Durfee. William Field Reed. Washington, DC. Two Volumes. 1902 and 1905. Volume 1, page 424 and Volume 2, page 163. Finding Your Forefathers in America. Archibald F. Bennett. Pages 281 286. On March 13, 1881, Tamma Durfee Miner Curtis wrote a Memorial which was a sketch of the lives of Edmund and Lana Pickle Durfee and of her own life. It is located in the LDS Archives in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, UT.End of Notes
