NOTES
1). He was an American colonial official, planter and merchant. Arriving in Virginia about 1672, he became the owner of a tract of land known as Turkey Island and subsequently acquired large holdings in other parts of Virginia. One of the most prominent slave holders and planters in the colony, he held various civil and military offices, including that of clerk of Henrico County, lieutenant colonel of militia, clerk of the Burgesses, and attorney general for the Crown of Virginia. He was a founder and trustee of the College of William and Mary.
