A governor of Medina and the Hejaz under the caliph Mu a w i y a I, where he showed unusual vigour, Marwan I wa s a n o l d ma n in poor health when he ascended the thron e him sel f i n 684 . He died of illness less than a year l ater . Hi s shor t reign was a period of continuous battl e betw een v ariou s faction s for the caliphate. Marwa n I was abl e to a rrang e the succe ssion of his son Ab d al Malik b y elimina ting a ll other con tenders for th e caliphate.
