A governor of Medina and the Hejaz under the caliph Mu a w i y a I, where he showed unusual vigour, Marwan I wa s a n o l d ma n in poor health when he ascended the thron e him sel f i n 684 . He died of illness less than a year l ater . Hi s shor t reign was a period of continuous battl e betw een v ariou s faction s for the caliphate.
