NOTES
1). There are no Northrops listed in the 1860 South Carolina Census from Marion District. John T. Northrop is listed in the 1870 South Carolina Census Index as 24 years of age, male, white, birthplace NC, living in Marion, Marion Township. Therefore, onecan assume that he moved to Marion sometime between 1860 and 1867 when he married. MGHB 2002 Numerous historical references have been found that document a yellow fever epidemic beginning in 1862 in Wilmington, NC, which decimated the local population. This epidemic and other sicknesses brought in by soldiers from the Civil War, continued untilthe end of the war. Much of the healthy local population fled the city. MGHB 2002 The population evacuated as much as possible, many of the wealthier citizens leaving behind a hired associate to maintain correspondence and transact simple matters. Source www.fortunecity.com millennium hollyoaks.410 Yellow.Fever.htm With the onset of the Civil War, John D. Taylor s lifestyle was shattered. He led the Red Brigade at the Battle of Bentonville and lost an arm in the process. His son, Walker, was born 26 October 1864, in Marion, South Carolina where his mother had fled to escape the yellow fever epidemic in Wilmington. Harsh economic pressures of reconstruction probably thrust Walker Taylor into the business world at the age of 14 when he went to work as an office boy for the deRosset and Northrop Insurance Agency.Source http brigadebgc.org our history.html I do not know at this point, whether the above article relates to our Northrops. However, at the very least it shows that some residents of Wilmington fled to Marion, SC, where our own John Taylor Northrop was living at the time of his marriage. MGHB 2002
2). It is presumed that the following letter was written about Mary Henagan, who might possibly have lived into the early 1940 s. Letter was written by Henagan descendant, John Henagan of Dillon, SC on 1 May 1961, on a Carmichael Henagan Furniture Co. letterhead to Alice Gary Early, also a Henagan descendant Dear Alice I overlooked giving you the information that I told you that I would send regarding Miss Mary Henagan s will when I wrote you earlier today. As I told you I looked up this one day while in Columbia after her death and found the following disposition madein the will to the following persons Mrs. Douglas McKay all jewelry and silver ware Burwell Dees Manning, Jr. $1,000.00 Edward W. Mullins Library valued at $100.00 he was also Executor J. Heywood Gibbes $3,000.00 Mrs. Elizabeth Post $500.00 Alma P. Thomas Residue of her estate She left some amount for the care of her dogs as we mentioned last week but I did not list it when I looked the will up in Oct. 1958. Mrs. Post is a nurse and believe that she helped look after Miss Mary quite a bit and her daughter, Mrs. Alma P. Thomas, also visited her regularly and I am told that gave lots of care to her. Mrs. Alma P. Thomas was the person that looked after everything as best that I could tell for her funeral and burial. I just thought that you might be interested in having this information and since I failed to include it in my earlier letter am getting it to you now. Sincerely, John
