NOTES
1). In Crumrine s 18 History of Washington County, PA, p. 776 The Sprowl family of five brothers came from England to Pennsylvania, remaining for a time near Shippensburg Cumberland County . Eventually two or three of the brothers came to Washington County, What happened to the others? Did they move south? and John Sprowl settled in what is now East Finley Twp. Washington Co., PA . These brothers must have located in this county early, as an account of Hugh Sprowls, dated 19 April 1786, is found in the controller general s report for a horse lost in the Sandusky expedition of 1782. Do you think that perhaps some of these brothers might have migrated south to the Carolinas, as others from PA did? Maybe the spelling of their name Spruill may have changed sometime along the way? What are the names of some of the early Spruills in the Carolinas, and when did they appear there? Where did they come from? The five PA brothers, as best I have them, were Hugh, John, James, Francis, and William. Then there is a mystery Thomas Sproul who appeared in Allegheny County, PA on the 1791 tax rolls. the following excerpts come from the PA Archives series Hugh Appeared in 1778 as a ranger on the frontier, in Westmoreland and Washington County, PA This is my line of descent John Listed as a freeman in Chester County, PA in 1765 James In Washington County, PA in Cecil twp. in 1781. Tax rolls. Francis On the 1766 Chester County tax rolls William Nothing currently known These names reappear in the different branches, which is another clue that they were all of the same family. Some of their descendants moved into Ohio, and probably other states. I haven t really pursued tracking the stray ones down yet. I would love to hear any thoughts on the above.
