NOTES
1). royalty.ged The Augustan. 66. Mikhail IV Feodorovich Romanov 1613 1645 . He was related to Rurik through the Shuiskys, of all people. His father, Filaret, quickly contrived to return to Moskva, was made Patriarch, and became the power behind the throne, Tsar inall but name. His reign was a period of retrenchment. During this time, Russia s international trade and contacts with foreigners increased. The main entrepot for tade with Europe was the city of Arkhangel sk on the White Sea. Generally speaking, foreign merchants were allowed only to be wholesalers, selling to and buying from a group which now appears as the most elite class of Russian merchants, the gosti. In the rise and fall of idividual gosti, and in the etreme difficulty and uncertainty of their situatio, and in the rigid state control of the economy, we may read the tale of the failure of capitalism to develop in Romanov Russia. Until his death in 1633, Patriarch Filaret ruled the state. Thereafter, Mikhail was under the influence of various favorites. The newness of the dynasty led to the dalling of many Zemsky Sobors, with varying success. When Mihail died, the country still had not fully recovered from the Time of Troubles.
2). royalty.ged TITL Czarine of Russia.
