Elizabeth Ann Gilchrist BIO Ernie was born and grew up on an Indiana farm located at the East end of Rocklane, a small village which is 5 miles east of Green wood. He graduated from Clark Twp. High School in 1946 Franklin College, Franklin. IN in 1950 with a B.A. degree inHistory and Physical Education. He started teaching and coaching at Spartanburg High School in Randolph Co., IN. Between Xmas and New Years of 1952, he accepted a teaching job in South Georgia where he stayed for 25 years. While in GA at three differentschools, some of his basketball teams were involved in 4 regional championships, 2 semi final champion ships, one team reaching the final State Tourney Game. In 1963, his golf team, featuring future touring PRO, Larry Hinson, won the GA State tourney. In1963, he left school work, taking advantage of an opportunity to join Fleetwood Enterprises, a national mobile home builder. He became sales manager of the Douglas, GA plant and was later appointed as general manager of the Macomb,IL plant. In the early 1970 s, Ernie opened his own Goodyear Tire Center, a franchise agreement. This was sold back to the company in 1975 and he returned to Indiana where he worked at sales and sales management jobs until Ann helped influence him to return to school work. Returning to school and getting a M.A. in Deaf Education, he joined Ann on the staff of the State Deaf School in Indianapolis, IN. There he taught high school history and social sciences while coaching football for the first five years. In 1982 and 1983, his teams succeeded in winning the National Deaf Championship both years. In June, 1989, he and Ann retired to Western North Carolina where they are enjoying the climate, the golf, and each other. REFERENCES 1. Ernest H. GRUBB, husband of compiler 2.
