NOTES
1). 1735328.ged BeamandWilson.FTW this from Ancestry.com sign2me@pclv.com Captured at the battle of Dunbar, Sept. 3 1650, deported to Barbados, then Maryland as an in dentured POW. His surname spelling was changed to Beall by the English in 1651 as a condit ion of indenture. The A was inserted into the name of Col. Ninian Bell of Largo by the English followin g his capture at the Battle of Dunbar. That spelling was adapted as a mark of respect by man y other Bells from Fife he brought over to Maryland in the decades that followed. That s als o how the MacGregors became McGreuthers, and later Magruders, and the Colquhouns became Cahoo ns. The English had this bizarre notion that changing the spelling and or the pronunciatio n of Scottish surnames would somehow destroy the clan system. The White House now stands on land he once owned Beall s Levels. His Rock of Dumba rton tract is now Georgetown in the District of Columbia, and Georgetown is named after his g randson George rather than King George of George Washington. He was also the first Presbyterian Elder anywhere in the Americas and learned his fait h at the parish church in Upper Largo, then called Kirkton of Largo. Ninian referred to himself as Ringin Bell his entire life. Ringin is how Lowland Sco ts pronounced Ninian. He may have been born on St. Ninian s Day, Aug 16, 1625, which woul d explain his given name and why he was not named in the Scottish tradition after his grandfa ther Alexander. There may have been a family rift over religion.
