NOTES
1). Harlan Weldon Morris, known as Dewy , Dude, or H.D., service in WWI, won the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star and Purple Heart. Co. H, 60th Infantry was in Getteysburgh, Pa. and Fort Gibson, Georgia.
2). At age 93 Essie maintained her mental faculties. She was known for her ability to recall times, places, friends, enemies, dates etc. Her main love of her life was her family. She used the phrase our people meaning mainly our kind of family. She enjoyed walking through the neighborhood. While visiting Joy in Los Gatos in June l987 a large German Shepherd jumped on her and knocked her down breaking her hip. She had surgery and made a good recovery. The next year she suffered a heart attack. Aftera short hospital stay she came home and resumed her normal life style while taking heart medication. The move to California seemed to be stressful for her and she came down with a case of shingles that was very painful. We had a nice trip back to Prescott after which she told us she was having rectal bleeding but didn t want to worry us. Examination revealed a hard growth in the colon and surgery was advised even though she was 90. the doctor said she was in good health for her age, and he felt she had good years left to live. After the surgery her heart wasn t beating in rhythm and she spent some time in the cardiac care unit until regular beat was established. She was never quite as strong after that. She was able to walk with a walker for awhile. Then used the wheelchair. Finally for two years she was bedridden. Her major complaint was sense of pressure rectally relying on Milk of Magnesia nightly. She kept a good appetite until the end
