1). 1 NAME Gurnan 1 UPDA 2 DATE 1400 2 PLAC Esquire of the body to King Richard 2 SOUR S28 3 PAGE Sept 1997 p. 26 2 QUAY 3 In 1381 he was escorting the 14 year old Ling at Smithfield London when Richard was threatened by Wat Tyler d.1831 , leader of the Peasants Revolt. William Walworth, the Mayor of London, arrested Tyler on the spot, but the rebel leader drew his dagger and attempted to stab him. As Walworth fought back, Cavendish ran Tyler through 2 or 3 times with his sword. Cavendish was knighted for his deed, and received a grant of £40 from King Richard.
