1). 1 NAME The Good 1 UPDA 2 PLAC Only Welsh ruler to issue a coinage A grandson of Rhodi Mwar. Mawr He briefly united north & south Wales under his governorship. By marriage to Elen, daughter of the king of Dyfed, he secured that kingdom c.904 and soon extended his realm into the area of south Wales known as Deheubarth. He also absorbed Powys but had to acknowledge Edward the Elder and later Ethelsatan as overlords in light of threatened invasions by the Danes. The law code which he is credited with initiating the Laws of Hywel still survives in a 13th century manuscript.
