1). 1 NAME James the Gross Who upon hearing of his father s imprisionment, came down from the highlands with a considerable force, burnt the town of Dunbarton, and killed Sir John Stewart, governor of the castle, with many others, for which he was obliged to fly to Ireland, where he died before 1451. By a lady of the name of Macdonald, he had 7 sons, the eldest of whom, Andrew Stewart, Lord Avandale, and 2 of his brothers were legitimated 17 April 1479.
