   "He learned the printer's trade in the office of the "P o r t l and Advertiser."  He went to New Orleans and to Bat o n R og ue , Louisiana, but in 1855 he went to Boston a s a c ompo sit o r of the "Saturday Evening Gazette", the n as a p rinte r o n t he "Boston Herald" and the next yea r as an ed itoria l wr iter .  Later he was the head of th e editoria l departm ent .  In 1 861 he helped raise the 11 th Massachu setts, int endi ng to g o into the field himsel f but resign ed for furt her t raining .
