He was adopted by William Dee Plyler and Alice Matthews Plyler when he was 4 years old. Born Sam Bodie Matthews and adopted at age 4 by his aunt, Mrs. Alice Matthews Plyler and her husband, William Dee Plyler. Sam s natural father was Sam Matthews, younger brother of Alice.
