NOTES
2). bobspu.ged BIO Shortly after Lillie s birth, her family moved to northeastern OKLAHOMA. They returned to INDIANA, moving to the north central part of the state about the time she started to school. From the earliest memories of compiler, Aunt Lil and Uncle Lesterlived in South Bend near the airport. The GILCHRIST family usually visited them once a year, but compiler also brought a friend and stayed there for a weekend after their children were all married and had moved away. That was a very enjoyable weekend, long remembered by both of their houseguests. Lillie suffered recurring ear infections as a child. This was in the days before medically inserted tubes were used to drain fluid from the middle ear. Because of the severity and frequency of the infections, she experienced progressive hearing loss. By the time her children were grown, she was severely hearing impaired. In spite of compiler s experience with deafness and the use of hearing aids, it came as a bit of a shock to hear her middle aged aunt say I mLucky. When the grandchildren come and it gets too noisy and confusing or when I get tired of listening to your uncle, I can just take these things out of my ears and the world is full of peace and quiet again . That was her positive side of it herhusband did not appreciate her ability to shut him up as much as she did . The HUSTON s daughter spent considerable time in FLORIDA after she married the second time. Each year Lester and Lillie seemed to stay a little longer when they went to visit Margaret. Finally , the older couple sold their South Bend home to make Marion Co., FL their permanent residence. They enjoyed the climate and Lester could do a lot of fishing. Although Lillie s health had been failing for several years, she was the one left alone when Lester s diabetes took his life in 1994. They had been married nearly 67 years. During their retirement years they had traveled widely. On a few of these trips, Lillie s older sister, Hettie, joined them in their pickup and camper to driveto OKLAHOMA, FLORIDA and even ALASKA! March, 1996 Lillie s younger brother, Hubert, loaned compiler some Family Record Sheets from their mother s Bible. On one sheet. Lillie is listed the 10th of Frank s 13 children. Her birthis recorded Lillie Ruth O dell was Borned March 13, 1907, then in a darker ink has been added, Crawfordsville Ind and under that Montgomery Co. The 1920 census shows Lillie R. at 12 years of age enumerated in the household of her parents.Early in 1997, Lillie returned from her home in FLORIDA to make her residence with her eldest son, Dick , and his wife, Vesta, in South Bend. She was there when her youngest brother, Knute , passed away in June, 1997, leaving only Lillie and Callie as his surviving siblings. REF 1.
