Letter to compiler, 13 Jan.1998 BIO Uncle Sam had a beautiful tenor singing voice according to family reports. As he aged, his voice was strongly affected by the palsy type of involuntary movement that was visible in his head and hands. Even his speaking voice became shaky and unsteady. Compiler was never told what caused this problem, but apparently there was some hereditary factor, since Sam s younger sister, Callie, exhibits similar symptoms, as did Ike, their brother. Sam seemed to have been more visibly affected by this problem than his siblings, however. His daughter, Pat, wrote in a letter to compiler, 13 Jan. 1998, Part of physical problem was Dad s being shell shocked in WW I. Compiler s husband made contact with John, Sam s eldest son, via mail in October, 1997. John responded to the request for additional data, and returned the family group sheets with appropriate corrections as well as additional data on his parents and maternal ancestors. Per John O DELL, ...As I understand again, my mother and dad met in Colorado when dad was confined to the hospital where mother was working. Dad served in WW I, but mother was never in the service... Compiler had stated in earlier biographies that Aunt Billie was a registered nurse on active military duty. Compiler was notsure when the family moved from INDIANA to OHIO, but in her letter Jan., 1998 , their youngest daughter, Pat wrote that the move took place in 1941. They lived for many years in Springfield Clark Co. OHIO. After Sam and Billie retired, they moved toTucson, where they stayed until after Sam s death in 1963. Then Billie moved to TEXAS to be with Pat and her family. At the time of Sam s death, his sister, Elizabeth, had never been on an airplane. When she was notified of his death, there was no other way to get there in time for the service. In spite of her fear, she and other family members living in northern Indiana agreed to meet in Chicago and fly together. March, 1996 Sam s youngest brother, Hubert, loaned compiler the Family History Sheets from his mother s Bible. Two entries were found concerning the date of Sam s birth on one sheet in green ink, apparently in a man s writingis, Sammil H Odell was bornd March the 25 1892. On another page, in a more feminine hand is a list of all Frank O DELL s children the fourth entry is, Samuel H. O dell were Borned March 25 1892. In darker, heavier ink is added Laurel Co Ky. O DELL, son 5308 E. 2nd St., Tucson, AZ 83711 written response to compiler s request for data on the family of Samuel H. and Billie WILLIAMS O DELL, Nov. 1997. 3. Patricia D. O DELL VORHIS, dau., 501 Ratcliff Dr., New Boston, TX 75570 2218. Letter to compiler, 13 Jan. 1998 4. Letter to authorities at the Statue of Liberty Mem., written by Alna s sister, Ruth WILLIAMS ALEXANDER, 17 April 1979. Letter contains story of their parents lives and the birth of the twins at Ellis Island. Letter transcribed in its entirety in BIO for Alna s mother, Alma SJOSTROM WILLIAMS. BIO Compiler s first memories of Aunt Billie were of her no nonsense manner of speaking. As a child, compiler was more than a little frightened of this relative. In later years, it became obvious that this was simply her manner and there was nothingto fear. Still, it often seemed that she barked orders and compiler s impression was that she might have been a good military officer! It was not until compiler began genealogical research that she realized that Billie O DELL had been born at ELLIS ISLAND. In the fall of 1997, compiler s husband made contact with Billie s son, John W. O DELL, via a letter and copies of the data compiler had at that time. One of the specific requests for information concerned the story behind Billie s birth on EllisIsland. John responded as follows, in a letter to compiler 13 Nov. 1997 As I understand, my grandparents came to the United States as indentured servants, lived and married in Iowa or Nebraska. They then went to Europe. When they returned to this country, my grandmother was expecting and gave birth on Ellis Island to two twin girls, Alma and Alna. It is documented that they were the first twins born on Ellis Island. Concerning compiler s initial report that Aunt Billie had served as a nurse in themilitary during WW I, John wrote As I understand again, my mother and dad met in Colorado when dad was confined to the hospital where mother was working. Dad served in WW I, but mother was never in the service. John also provided the name and place of birth of his maternal grandfather he did not give his grandmother s name, but recorded that she was born in SWEDEN.
