NOTES
1). bobspu.ged BIO Most documents show the birth of Isaac L. O DELL as 18 JAN 1861 the 1900 census, however shows his birth as JAN 1862. One document in the Civil War Pension File states that he was two months of age when his father died in Camp Cumberland Ford, KnoxCounty, KY. All other evidence indicates that he would have been one year and two months of age when Lacy O DELL died, 18 MAR 1862. In August, 1997, photocopies of Isaac s obituary and another of an article about Isaac from the Stutsman County sectionof a NORTH DAKOTA History book, give his date of birth as 18 January 1862. On the 1870 census, Isaac L. is listed in Sarah O DELL s home as being 8 years old. The widow and her four children were living in the Lynn Camp Post Office area in Laurel County, KY at this time. Sarah married William A. PHELPS in 1874. On the 1880 census, William PHELPS household consists of William, Sarah, his wife, his daughters, Louisa and Virginia compiler s grandmother , William s sons John and William J. and a Hireling listed as William MARION . Then, listed as a different family within the same household are Isaac O dell, son in law and Alcy E., daughter. Laurel County Marriage Records show the marriage of Isaac L. O DELL and Alice E. PHELPS on 22 February 1880. Data given about the groom is that he is 18 years of age, that he was born in Claiborne Co., Tennessee and that this was his first marriage. The wedding took place at the home of William PHELPS. Witnesses were Wm. BROCK and F.R. O DELL This isprobably an error and should have read W.F. or Frank O DELL, Isaac s older brother compiler s grandfather. This wedding would have taken place about 3 months before the census enumeration for 1880. The BRANCHES OF LAUREL reference listed above gives 2 19 1880 as the date of this marriage this was probably the date of the filing of application for marriage. William A. PHELPS died in 1887. In February, 1892 there is a deed recorded whereby Isaac L. O DELL, Alcie E. O DELL and Wm. J. PHELPS probably Wm. s son Jason convey their child s share s of the property belonging to A. PHELPS, deceased William to Sarah A. PHELPS for and in consideration of $25 each... in hand and surely paid... The deed specifies that this is the same land... whereon Sarah PHELPS now lives... Apparently the three agreed to give Sarah full ownership, at least of their three shares, and to give up any claim to William s estate. Compiler next found Isaac and Alcie PHELPS O DELL on the 1900 census in Walnut Township, Montgomery County, IN. The third child listed on this census was born in Montgomery County in 1888 it appears that compiler s mother s Uncle Ike was the first of the O DELLs to move from Laurel County, KY to INDIANA. On the 1900 census,Ike and Alcie have six children residing in their home. One of the questions on the 1900 census was addressed to the wife as to how many children she had given birth to and how many of those were still living in 1900. Alcie responded that she had givenbirth to 8 and seven were still living, so there evidently was one child gone from the home by census time that year. Those still in the home were Flora William L. Alassy C. China H. Robert E. and Ida B., the baby, listed as 10 months of age. Per a letter from Hubert D. O DELL in March, 1996, his aunt and uncle, Alcie and Ike O DELL, left Montgomery County, IN in the early 1900 s and relocated in Eldridge, North Dakota where Ike was post master for several years. Hubert makes reference in the same letter to Ike and his youngest son Lacy Paul , visiting the family in northern INDIANA about 1924, after the death of Alcie E. PHELPS O DELL. Hubert makes the statement that his family all moved to California... but it is not clear whether this wasin reference to Ike s family or to the family of Lacy Paul. In August, 1997, compiler made contact with George L. BARRON, a genealogical researcher in Jamestown, ND Stutsman County . Mr. BARRON agreed to conduct a search for this O DELL family, and soon provided compiler with a large amount of documentation on the family. Among the obituaries, marriage records, cemetery indexes, etc. were photocopies of articles from two county history books which concern Isaac O DELL. The first, a lengthy article devoted to Isaac, is transcribed below in its entirety HISTORY OF NORTH DAKOTA, p 935 ISAAC L. O DELL Isaac L. O DELL, a merchant of Eldridge, has been engaged in the conduct of this business for about seven years, but has resided in the state since 1905. He was born near Cumberland Gap in the north east part of TENNESSEE, January 18, 1862, a son of Lacy and Sarah Owerby O Dell, the latter a daughter of a plantation and slave owner of Virginia. However, Mr. O Dell, the father of our subject, joined the Union army and because of his position on thequestion of the right of the south to withdraw from the Union he was forced to secretly leave his Tennessee home at night in order to save his life, and went to London, Kentucky. He died of fever in that state and was there buried. To him and his wife were born four children Mrs. Elizabeth PARMAN, living in Kentucky John Henry, of Indiana William Franklin, of OKLAHOMA and Isaac L. The last named was but two years old when he went with his mother to KENTUCKY and spent his boyhood in the family home near London, acquiring a district school education. On the 22nd of February, 1878, he was married in Laurel county, that state, to Alcie PHELPS, a native of Kentucky, and they have become the parents of nine children Dora E., the wife of W.T. MOORE, who follows farming near Salem, OREGON Flora A., who died at the age of twenty five years John Franklin, who died when a year old William, who is farming in NORTH DAKOTA Catherine B. who became the wife of Roy TORY and died at Lakota, NORTH DAKOTA, in 1915Helen, the wife of Frank ALEXANDER, of SOUTH DAKOTA Robert, who was born in INDIANA and is now with the Rock Island Plow Company at Minneapolis Ida Belle, at home and Lacy Paul, at Jamestown. Mr. and Mrs. O DELL began their domestic life in KENTUCKY,but after seven years removed with their family to INDIANA, settling near Crawfords ville, in Montgomery county, where for nine years Mr. O DELL was employed by James A. MOUNT, for four years chief executive of that state. He lived there until 1905, when he sold out all his interests in INDIANA and made his way to Jamestown, NORTH DAKOTA. For four years he cultivated a rented farm and then purchased a stock of merchandise from Alvin VESSEY, continuing the business in the same building for five years. In 1914 he purchased ground and erected a substantial business block costing about five thousand dollars, and in this he has a stock of general merchandise and machinery valued at forty five hundred dollars. He is doing a good business and his trade is steadily growing. His store is neatly and tastefully arranged and his goods attractively displayed. In addition to conducting his merchantile interests he served as postmaster of Eldridge for eight years. Mr. O DELL has put forth every possible effort toaid in the upbuilding of his village. He was one of the organizers of the Eldridge Commercial Club in 1915 and became its first president. Since that time the club has been instrumental in securing the establishment of a bank, a blacksmith shop and a restaurant in this place. Politically Mr. O DELL is a republican, and for two years filled the office of justice of the peace. He belongs to the Masonic lodge at Jamestown and is an exemplary representative of the craft, loyal to its teachings and its purposes. Another book, A CENTURY OF STORIES, JAMESTOWN AND STUTSMAN COUNTY 1883 1983, Towns and Townships page 286 , carries an article on Eldridge town and township, which includes the following passages ...This structure was built in 1881 by Henry VESSEY, who moved here from Sauk Centre, Minn. It is of Victorian style with ginger bread decorations and dormer windows. It once had a large porch across the front, but this was removed a few years ago because it overlapped railroad property... ...Isaac O DELL built a second grocery store in 1913 on the south side of the tracks, and this was built in the style of a pitched roof and false front. This is owned by the McDONALD family at the present time... Mr. BARRON has also provided copies of an obituary and another item from the Jamestown newspaper of the day, The Jamestown Sun. p 3 19 Nov. 1940 FUNERAL SERVICES FOR ISAAC O DELL WILL BE HELD WED. AFTERNOON Funeral services for Isaac O DELL, who died in Los Angeles, Calif., while visiting his son Robert O DELL, will be held Wednesday afternoon at the Eddy Funeral Chapel. The body arrived this afternoon and was taken to the chapel. The 3 o clock service will be in charge of Dr. J.A. SAATHOFF. Burial will be made in Highland Home cemetery. p 3 20 Nov. 1940 FUNERAL SERVICES FOR ISAAC O DELL HELD HERE TODAY Dr. J.A. 2). bobspu.ged BIO This daughter of William PHELPS and sister of compiler s grandmother is shown in the PHELPS household in 1860 as being an infant, just a few months of age. She should have shown up on the 1870 census as about 10 years old, but her name was not listedin William s household that year. She appears again in 1880 as the daughter of William PHELPS, but also as one part of a couple who are counted as a second family in the same dwelling. Isaac L. O DELL is listed with her as William s son in law. Marriagerecords in Laurel Co., KY show this marriage took place in February, just before the census was taken. The BRANCHES OF LAUREL reference below shows this marriage on 2 19 1880 , probably the day the application was filed. In 1892, after her father sdeath, Alsey who signed her name Alcie E. Odell , her brother William J. and her husband, Isaac L. O DELL, sold their shares of William PHELPS property to Isaac s mother, Sarah Ann OVERBY O DELL PHELPS. Then by 1900, Alcie and Isaac had removed toINDIANA and are shown on the census in Walnut Twp., Montgomery Co., IN with 6 of their 8 children. Alcie reported that she gave birth to 8 children, but that 7 were living at that time . Flora, the oldest child at home, was 19, so it was evident that anolder child had married and left home. Dora E. md W.T. MOORE in 1898 On the marriage record for Alcie and Isaac, the data given for the bride is that she was 20 years old 2 years older than Isaac she was born in Laurel Co. her father was born in Grayson Co., VA her mother in Laurel Co. the wedding took place at the home of William PHELPS and the witnesses were Wm. BROCK and F.R. O DELL . This is probably Frank or W.F. compiler s grandfather and a brother to Isaac . It was suspected thatcompiler s mother was named for this aunt. The given name appears in a variety of spellings Alsey, Alcie, Alice, Alesy and even Allice, depending on which document is being examined. Compiler s mother s first name was spelled Alcie . The discovery ofAlice Elizabeth PHELPS O DELL on an index of obituaries in the Stutsman County, ND Library confirmed compiler s suspicion that her mother was named for this aunt. To this point, only the middle initial E. was known. April, 1996 A letter to compiler from Hubert D. O DELL talked about Alcie PHELPS My mother had a sister, Alcie, whom she was very fond of and whom I never seen they corresponded regularly and Aunt Alcie sent my mother a setting of silver laced wyandotte chicken eggs,I guess they were what you would call pretty but as I remember their eggs werent any different than mothers old domineckers. Now there was one brother to Mom and aunt Alcie whose name was Jason...and Uncle Ike moved to Indiana and my mother came toIndiana to take care of aunt Alcie when she gave birth, my Mother liked Indiana so much... Uncle Ike moved his family to Eldridge North Dakota, he became post master there for years Now I think that the baby you wrote about was Aunt Alcies youngest sonwhose name was Lacy Paul and it runs in my mind that he was about your mother s age, he was one of the youngest soldiers in the first World War. Soon after my mother died in 1924, Lacy Paul came to Ind. for a while. After Aunt Alcie passed away, uncle Ike came to visit dad and they came and spent some time with Harriette and I in 1940... His Uncle Ike s family all went to California...My mother and Aunt Alcie were very close and Uncle Ike and my dad were close... July1996 Compiler found a birth record listed in Vol. 2, Index to Birth Records, Montgomery Co., IN, 1882 1920, p 186. It reads ODELL female Isaac ODELL Alice PHILLIPS, 20 August 1893, Bk. H5 35. From birth years given on the 1900 census, there isno female whose date of birth matches that of this record. Alcie did report on the 1900 census that one of her eight children was no longer living it is possible that this child was the female born August, 1893, between the births of Robert E. Aug 1892 and Ida July 1899 . August, 1997 Compiler established contact with George L. BARRON, a genealogical researcher in Jamestown, ND. Mr. BARRON has provided a large amount of photocopied documentation on this family. One of the items copied was an article from a ND History concerning Isaac O DELL and his family, residents of Stutsman County. In that article, the ninth child of Isaac and Alcie is named. John Franklin, who died when a year old... It is likely that the female born to this couple in August of 1893 was actually a male, John Franklin. However, it should also be noted that there were at least two other gaps between births of the children in this family that would have been possible times for John Franklin s birth. The following obituary and follow up article from the Jamestown newspaper were copied by Mr. BARRON p 1 22 October 1938 MRS. ISAAC O DELL, ELDRIDGE PIONEER PASSED AWAY FRI.
